About Mas de La Baou
In the heart of Provence, just a short walk from the village of Céreste-en-Luberon, stands a unique place: Mas de La Baou.
Its name comes from the Provençal language: mas refers to a traditional farmhouse, while baou (or bau) means a rocky cliff — a fitting description of its location, perched above the Encrême stream.
The origins of the mas are very old, probably dating back to medieval times. Situated at a strategic crossroads outside the village, it may once have served as a stopping point for travelers and pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
A Carefully Restored Heritage
Abandoned for many years, the mas was brought back to life beginning in 2009 through a complete restoration carried out with great respect for traditional materials and rural architecture. Local craftsmen worked to preserve the building’s original character while adapting it for modern comfort.
This restoration was officially recognized with the Fondation du Patrimoine label, highlighting its architectural and historical value.
Throughout the stone walls, traces of the past remain visible: reused pierced stones from the Château de Céreste, a traditional calade-paved threshing floor, and other discreet reminders of the agricultural life that once shaped this place.
The Baou Bridge
Just behind the mas lies the charming Baou Bridge, often referred to locally as a “Roman bridge.” In fact, it dates back to 1740, though it stands close to the ancient Via Domitia, whose remains can still be seen nearby.
For centuries, this crossing has allowed travelers and pilgrims to safely cross the stream and continue their journey.
Today, Mas de La Baou welcomes guests seeking an authentic Provençal experience — a place where history, nature, and tranquility come together in an exceptional setting.
